Club awaiting Eto’o response to new contract offer

www.fcbarcelona.cat

FC Barcelona are awaiting a response from Samuel Eto’o to their offer of a two-year contract extension. The contract would give the Cameroon striker two more years at the club, whilst maintaining the same salary.

The club made the offer yesterday evening once the player’s agent had made clear Eto’o’s desire to stay at the Nou Camp. If he accepts the new deal, Eto’o’s contract will run until June 30th 2012.

In a press conference held earlier today, Eto’o’s agent Josep Maria Mesalles explained that Eto’o “wants to stay and play out the year he still has left on his contract. He feels he can be useful at the club, but if the club or the manager doesn’t want him, he would be prepared to leave”.

Mesalles went on to confirm that Eto’o had been informed of the club’s new offer by phone, but that he wished to consult with him in person before giving a public response.

Laporta: “Eto'o has a stratospheric offer”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta admits that the Cameroon striker has “a stratospheric offer from another team, which would make him into the best-paid player in the world”. Nevertheless, Laporta would like Eto'o to stay at Barça.

This Saturday in an interview with radio programme ‘Tarda Tardà' on Icat FM, Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta spoke about his taste in music but also had time to look at the latest first team news.

Bid for Eto'o

He also pointed out that if the Cameroon striker stays and Barça end up signing David Villa, the two players would be “compatible” as “the season is long”.

Keirrison and Luis Filipe

Another name linked with Barça this week has been Keirrison. Laporta announced that his signing for Barça is on the point of being completed.

Turning to Deportivo de la Coruña’s full-back, Luis Filipe, Laporta said that if Lendoiro asks for €20 million for the player “then I’ll make no effort to get him. He’s out of the market there”.

The French striker played in the 2003 final at Saint Denis in Paris against Cameroon. France won its second Confederations Cup and Henry played all 120 minutes of the match, scoring the only goal of the game in extra-time. Samuel Eto'o also appeared in the final, coming on as a sub in the second half and racking up 57 minutes in total.

At the age of 17 years and 3 months he became the youngest player at the 1998 World Cup in France and was the only player who had been born in the '80's.

After Leganés, he went on loan to RCD Espanyol (1998-1999) but played very little and subsequently retuned to Real Madrid (1999-2000). In the 1999-00 season, he played a few times for RCD Mallorca, eventually spending four seasons there (2000-04), with the Balearic Island club sharing his rights with Real Madrid.

During his time with Mallorca, he became the highest ever league goal scorer in the history of the club, with 54 goals. He signed for Barca in the summer of 2004 for a transfer fee of 24 million euros after a long series of three-way negotiations with RCD Mallorca and Real Madrid, thus becoming the first Cameroonian player to defend the Barca colours. He made his debut for FC Barcelona in the first game of the season at Ràcing Santander, on August 29, 2004.

Since then, he has become a veritable goal machine, scoring 25 times in his first season and making a huge contribution to winning the championship. His goal against Levante clinched the league title. He has needed just 67 matches to reach the landmark figure of 50 goals, outstripping some of the great Barca legends of the past.

Since he joined the Club he has been chosen as African Player of the Year 2004, 2005 and 2006, and picked up third place in the FIFA World Player 2005. He is a full international and one of the outstanding players in the Cameroon team and has a huge popular following in his country.

In the 2005-06 season, he was the top scorer in the Spanish League with 26 goals. In the Champions League Final on May 17 in Paris, it was Eto'o who scored Barcelona's equaliser after the Blaugrana had gone a goal down to Arsenal.
